And the New Patriarch is ...

His Eminence Metropolitan KIRILL of Smolensk and Kaliningrad.

Image from LA Times.

He will be enthroned on Sunday.

Many God grant him many years and much wisdom.

From one Catholic I would add my Amen to that prayer.

Totally aside from Orthodox/Catholic relations, I have heard very encouraging reports concerning Patriarch Krill and his zeal and approach to the renewal of Orthodox faith and morals in Russia.

"We would like to see a godly man upon the patriarchal throne, a man of humility, but not an innovator or a "modernizer"." AMEN. May God place such men in every Protestant pulpit also.

Are you pleased with the choice? Is this man's relationship with the Pope considered a good thing? What are your thoughts?

Are you pleased with the choice?

A cautious yes. Ultimately it is by his fruit that you will know a good hierarch.

Is this man's relationship with the Pope considered a good thing?

Depends. If it is used to try to force a union in any degree, no. If it is used to maintain a cordial and respectful relationship between Orthodox and Catholics, yes.

What are your thoughts?

Simply this: it is hard to know what a Russian "modernizer" (as he is purported to be) looks like. Dollars to doughnuts a Russian modernizer looks nothing like an American modernizer and may be a good thing.
